Then I about poo-pooed and told them it is a Historic instrument and they went to a different database and everything checked out. I forgot to tell them that and they matched my serial number up with a 1990 Epiphone Flying Vee. And as I've said before, be sure to tell them that you're guitar is a Historic. But as I already said, it's usually best to email Gibson anyway. I've dated many Historics this way and verified them with Gibson and they check out. Most of the 2000s have a 9 0XXX numbering scheme where the "0" indicates the year, but the block of 3 digit serial numbers ran out in late 2000, so they went to a 4 digit number system, and just shifted the "0" over to the space that is usually blank. The reason for this is that there is no reliable documentation from this time period. Serial numbers from 70 and 80s era Epiphone guitars made in Japan are not supported. Vintage numbers from 1932 to 1970 are supported. My guitar (serial 90XXXX) was produced in 2000. 3.5) The Epiphone serial number decoder currently supports 12 serial number formats from 25 factories. Sorry if I misread ya.Īs far as Historic serial numbers, call me crazy, and you're usually right on, but I think you're way off on this issue. I just thought you were being a little smart-alecky (sp?) this time, so I thought I'd do the same in return. I've read a lot of your posts, so I pretty much know where you're coming from. Otherwise 9 1351, a 2001 R9 made in January, would be the 351st guitar made in 2000-and I know that's not the case.Įd: No problem. That pretty much blows the sequential theory right out the window. According to your numbering scheme every guitar I've seen that was made in 2001 is a 2000! The sequential thing doesn't work either- they started with 1300 or 1350 this year, putting aside the first 300 or 350 numbers for whatever reason. You say it works most of the time? It doesn't work ANY of the time! It doesn't work for YOUR guitar, it doesn't work for Strictly's guitar, or my guitar, or any Y2K I've owned, it doesn't work for RICH's 2001 R9, it doesn't work for the vast majority of guitars. I have NO idea where you got your info on the numbering scheme, but man, it was whacked. They were always four digits, with a leading 0 or two if they needed them. I was BEING diplomatic! You would have been incredibly upset and hurt at the message I was GOING to post so I wiped it out and started new.Īnd they didn't use three digit numbers.
